Renko Usami is a college student majoring in physics, which pretty much explains her whole approach to life—everything's gotta make sense, everything's gotta be logical. She and her best friend Maribel Hearn run what's technically a club for necromancers, except they don't actually do necromancy stuff. They're ghost hunters, basically, investigating spirits and paranormal phenomena instead.
The real thing that sets them apart is their obsession with Gensoukyou. They're convinced it's real, and as far as anyone can tell, they're among the only people in the outside world who even know it exists. Most would call them conspiracy theorists or occult enthusiasts, but Renko takes her physics background seriously enough that she actually tries to approach the paranormal from a logical angle rather than just believing whatever sounds spooky.
