Maurice was found by Eureka under a pile of bodies during the massacre at Ciudades del Cielo and adopted by her afterward. He's the kind of kid who picks up on things adults would rather he didn't—he's one of the few who actually questions whether the grown-ups are telling the truth, and he's unusually attuned to Eureka's emotional state. He knows what happened to his biological mother, but he doesn't seem to hold it against Eureka. If anything, he embraces being her adopted son, sometimes to an almost uncomfortable degree.
What's striking about Maurice is how resistant he is to Renton compared to the other kids. He rarely gives him credit, even when Renton does something genuinely impressive. It's his one consistent blind spot in the series.
