Gerapen is a massive, intimidating-looking guy who's actually got a good heart underneath all that. He served as a captain in the White Wing Army under Pago, a young commander Gerapen considered a brother figure. The thing is, Gerapen's kindness made him an easy mark—Pago exploited his trust by getting him to help "relocate" young women refugees to a new village, when really they were being used in twisted experiments.
Gerapen didn't catch on until he stumbled across the undead creatures Pago had created. Even then, he couldn't believe his "brother" was capable of something so dark, not until he witnessed Pago's horrifying acts firsthand. That's when everything clicked, and the betrayal hit hard enough that he teamed up with Koinzell to take Pago down for good.
Everyone assumed Gerapen died when Schtemwölech's lair got destroyed, but he turned up alive at Jullas-Abllas. Turns out the parasite from Pago's corpse saved him. He became a serious asset to the group after that, fighting with tentacle arms granted by the parasite—though fans often note he sometimes has oddly feminine reactions pop up at random, which adds an unexpected quirk to his character.
