Lei Shen comes across as the joker of the group—relaxed and quick with a laugh, which puts him at odds with Hong's more serious demeanor. Despite comparable mental strength, their personalities couldn't be more different. Where Hong keeps things buttoned up, Lei Shen is warmer and more emotionally open, and his constant wisecracks create plenty of comedic tension between him, Hong, and Luo Feng.
But don't mistake his humor for a lack of spine. When things get real, Lei Shen flips a switch. During the fight against the Golden Horned Beast, he proved willing to sacrifice himself for Earth, continuing to battle even after losing his lower body. He's capable of cold pragmatism too—he won't hesitate to kill an Earthling who isn't contributing to humanity's survival. He also holds grudges; Luo Di's disrespect toward the trio clearly got under his skin. Underneath all the joking, Lei Shen and Hong actually share the same fierce self-discipline and sky-high standards, both of them pushing themselves relentlessly.
Luo Feng respects him, though he doesn't quite see Lei Shen as reliable as Hong. Interestingly, Lei Shen seems to agree with that assessment about himself.
