Eosinophil
A type of white blood cell that makes up a surprisingly small slice of your total white blood cell count. They're known for showing up in force during allergic reactions and parasitic infections—basically, they multiply like crazy whenever your body detects either of those threats.
Despite their relatively low numbers under normal circumstances, eosinophils aren't completely helpless. They can perform phagocytosis just like their fellow white blood cells, meaning they're capable of engulfing and destroying pathogens. They're just not the strongest fighters in your immune system's lineup, which is probably why they need backup and only really mobilize when something specific triggers them.
