Kanenari owns Shark Gym, the gym where Aoba Suzuki trains in MMA. When we first meet Kanenari, we discover that he has not been fighting in matches for quite some time. It seemed Kanenari had lost his way until Aoba joined the gym, as he had a habit of drinking at the gym.
Before Kanenari started training new MMA fighters at Shark Gym, he fought in the minor MMA organization Banryu. He was notorious for his foul mouth in matches that would rile up the crowd.
