On the surface, Ares seems confident, refined, and genuinely caring—but that's mostly an act. He's actually pretty selfish and cowardly, prone to panic in combat and deeply bothered by being measured against Red. Things get worse after he reunites with Red and Lit; he turns power-hungry and bitter, eventually kicking Red out of the party when the rest of the group caught up to his level, claiming Red wasn't a "true" companion. Fans often note how badly his character deteriorates once his insecurities take over.
