A young resident of Plated Witch who appears in episodes 34 and 35 of Galaxy Express 999. Wheeler's entire life has been defined by poverty and exclusion—specifically, by not having gold plating, something the planet's upper class uses to set themselves apart. This barrier keeps him separated from Mekki Gold, the girl he loves, making his desperation to acquire plating understandable if not sympathetic.
When the Galaxy Express 999 stops at Plated Witch, Wheeler spots an opportunity. He steals Maetel's suitcase, planning to sell it and finally scrape together enough money for gold plating. Tetsuro catches him in the act, and the two end up fighting. But Tetsuro and Wheeler's dying mother manage to convince him that theft won't solve the real problem—the planet's obsession with gold plating itself does. Instead of chasing wealth, Wheeler agrees to help destroy the planet's core, which will eliminate gold plating from everyone all at once. With Tetsuro's help, he succeeds. In the end, he and Mekki Gold are finally able to be together, now that wealth and status no longer divide them.
