Sharpner's a classmate of Gohan's at Orange Star High School. He starts out giving Gohan a hard time, but once he sees what Gohan can actually do athletically, they become friends. He's into working out and staying fit himself, though he doesn't train in martial arts or anything serious like that. His real interest lies in Videl, who also goes to their school.
During the 25th Tenka-ichi Budoukai, Sharpner becomes obsessed with figuring out who the Great Saiyaman really is. When he finally figures it out and realizes it's been Gohan the whole time, he's genuinely let down—the answer was right there at school the entire time. After the Buu saga wraps up, his story basically disappears like Erasa's does. He's one of those characters fans sometimes wonder about in the later series. And yeah, his name is basically just "sharpener" with a slight spin on it—fitting for a school setting where characters tend to get named after ordinary objects.
