Tsuyukami is a wandering spirit who ended up taking residence in an old shrine, where he became dependent on human prayer for his strength. By the time he shows up in Natsume's life looking to reclaim his name, most of his devoted worshippers had long since died—except for one elderly woman named Hana, who kept the faith alive on her own.
