Choi is one of the original members of the Korean Team in The King of Fighters, alongside Chang Koehan and Kim Kaphwan. His name literally means "lightning" in Korean (more accurately spelled Bungeh), which fits his electric, high-energy fighting style. He's one of several KOF fighters who uses weapons—in his case, a pair of clawed leather gloves.
He wasn't always on the side of good. Choi was a street criminal who tried to ambush Kim during a late-night walk, but got thoroughly beaten instead. Rather than turn him in, Kim forced him into a "rehabilitation project," determined to redirect Choi's talents away from crime. That's also where Choi met Chang Koehan, another criminal under Kim's iron-fisted mentorship. The two have spent years trying—and repeatedly failing—to escape Kim's grueling training regimen, often played for laughs. Things only got worse when Jhun Hoon joined the picture, bringing his own fanatical sense of justice to match Kim's.
By The King of Fighters XI, Choi and Chang had convinced Kim to compete on the Garou Team. The three appear together in that game's ending, celebrating at PaoPao Cafe. But now that they've actually been declared "rehabilitated," Choi and Chang have started wondering what Kim's up to—and more importantly, how many other criminals he's got lined up for his next training project.
