He's basically Sakaguchi's only real friend—or more accurately, his drinking buddy. The two of them scrape together a living hauling coal from the town's abandoned mine; Sakaguchi shows up to provide the muscle, pulling the carts while he handles the rest, and they sell what they find. Whatever they make usually disappears into sake bars anyway, where they get properly drunk most nights.
Sakaguchi calls him "Old Man" because he's legitimately old enough to be his grandfather, but he acts like a kid. When Sakaguchi eventually headed to Tokyo to train at a sumo stable, he followed along. These days he picks up whatever work he can find to get by, though he still catches Sakaguchi's matches when he can.
