Charles Beams is a freelance LFO pilot and mercenary who works alongside his wife Ray. The two make their living transporting cargo and passengers, occasionally taking jobs to deal with thieves and raiders—pretty standard mercenary work. That changes when they're hired by the military to track down Eureka and the Nirvash, putting them directly at odds with Gekkostate.
Charles and Ray both have military history; they were part of SOF back in the day, which means they share complicated history with Holland, Dewey, and Adrock. It's the kind of past that tends to complicate things.
On the surface, Charles comes across as funny and relaxed—the kind of guy you'd want to grab a drink with. But that easygoing personality masks something harder underneath. He's still fundamentally a killer, and his tactical instincts from his time leading an elite unit haven't dulled. He's full of these kinds of contradictions. His quarters on the Swan display a collection of high-tech ref boards, but the weapon he always keeps close during combat is an old bolt-action rifle—possibly a Mauser Karabiner 98k. It looks outdated, but don't be fooled; the rounds are specially designed to punch through LFO armor. It's one of those details that says a lot about how he operates—mixing old and new, casual and lethal.
