Tatewaki Kuno is an upperclassman at Furinkan High who basically ran the place before Ranma showed up and knocked him off his pedestal. He comes from serious money and captains the kendo club, swinging his wealth and his sword with equal confidence. The guy's got a thing for dramatic speeches—he'll quote Shakespeare or Confucius (in the original Japanese, naturally) at the drop of a hat, which probably seemed cooler in his head than it actually plays out.
He's completely obsessed with Akane, but he also falls hard for Ranma's female form without ever catching on that she's actually his rival in a different body. There's this whole running joke where he overhears her name once, tries to write it down, and just. fails to connect the dots. So for the entire series he keeps calling her a "goddess in pig-tails" and never figures it out. Fans often point this out as one of the most persistent jokes in the show—the guy's infatuation is real, his obliviousness even more so.
