Hikari's one of the four childhood friends from Shioshishio, and he's basically the hot-headed one of the group. He's constantly calling Manaka out whenever she messes up, though it's pretty obvious he's got real feelings for her beneath all that scolding. His dad's the Chief Priest who serves the Sea God, which gives him a certain standing in their underwater community.
He starts off pretty prejudiced against surface dwellers—your typical "land people are the enemy" mentality. But as he gets to know Akari and Itaru and learns more about how the two worlds actually interact, his whole perspective shifts. By the end, he realizes surface humans and sea humans aren't fundamentally different from each other. It's a solid character arc, honestly.
