Ludwig is a tall, imposing guy constantly caught between the chaos of his crazy boss and Italy's antics. He's basically the long-suffering responsible one—serious, pessimistic, and wound so tight that he needs a beer to decompress. Life's thrown a lot at him, and he's got the tired expression to prove it.
His older brother Prussia lives with him, and while Prussia drives him nuts with his impulsive internet shopping and general nonsense, they've got each other's backs. Prussia calls him "West," which Ludwig tolerates about as well as he tolerates most things—with barely concealed irritation that masks genuine care.
Italy's his best friend, somehow. They first met when Germany captured him during WWI, which is an unusual way to start a friendship, but it stuck. When Italy joined his side in WWII, Ludwig and the other officers completely panicked about it, which is pretty funny in retrospect. Despite constantly bailing Italy out of trouble and putting up with his chaos, Ludwig treats him almost like a younger brother. It's clear Italy's the one getting the better deal in this relationship, but Ludwig wouldn't have it any other way.
Ludwig's a walking contradiction—a total neat-freak perfectionist who obsesses over rules and schedules, yet somehow completely hopeless with technology. He walks his three dogs (Blackie, Aster, and Berlitz, all aggressively masculine), cleans constantly, bakes, and recycles with the dedication of someone who's made it a personal mission. His hobbies are basically the poster child for German efficiency. He's also got weird taste in internet content, apparently, and he idolizes the old Roman empire in a way that's almost endearing.
Creator Hidekaz Himaruya has kept Ludwig's surname a mystery, saying fans would figure it out eventually.
