Maki Shijo's twin brother chose to attend public school instead of following his sister to her private institution, mainly because he wanted to keep playing soccer with a close friend. His parents weren't thrilled about the decision, so he made them a deal: he'd prove he could handle it by acing the national mock exams and bringing his youth soccer club to the inter-high championships. He came through on both fronts, topping the national exams and leading his team all the way to the tournament finals.
