Marianne vi Britannia was the Emperor's fifth wife and mother to Lelouch and Nunnally. Her maiden name, Lamperouge, is the one her son would eventually take. Born a commoner, she faced serious resentment from other imperial wives and the nobility—something Lelouch long believed led to her assassination. But his investigation complicated that theory; several Imperial House members without blood ties to her, including Clovis, Euphemia, and especially Cornelia, actually respected her deeply. Cornelia in particular idolized Marianne and spent considerable effort trying to solve her murder.
The Ashford family appears to have been her main supporters, which tracks with how badly their fortunes declined after her death and why they later agreed to shelter Lelouch and Nunnally. Marianne was an accomplished Knightmare Frame pilot—one of the earliest, piloting the Ganymede, developed by the Ashfords. Her skill earned her the nickname "Marianne the Flash."
Later in the series, it's revealed that C.C. has been communicating with Marianne somehow, which surfaces again in R2's early episodes. The exact nature of these conversations remains mysterious.
