Shinnosuke and his grandfather live deep in the Ryugenzawa forest, where they protect nearby villagers from the giant creatures that once served as their pets. Years back, Akane was vacationing there with her family when she got lost and was attacked by an enormous platypus—Shinnosuke saved her life. Not long after, Shinnosuke nearly died, and his grandfather gave him the Water of Life to keep him alive. The cure worked, but it came with a cost: Shinnosuke became dependent on it.
Fast forward to the present. A TV ad asking for help with the rising monster problem in Ryugenzawa jogs Akane's memory of her childhood rescue. Wanting to repay that debt, she heads back to the forest to find Shinnosuke. True to form, she's attacked by a giant creature on the way—and Shinnosuke saves her again, his back still scarred from old wounds. Though he's become pretty forgetful over the years, Shinnosuke welcomes her to stay with him and his grandfather. Eventually, Akane figures out how to help him: she applies a special moss to his scarred back and frees him from his Water of Life dependency.
