Spain's the kind of guy who's almost always grinning. He's got somewhat curly brown hair, green eyes, and lightly tanned skin—though depending on who's drawing him, he might look fair or olive-toned instead. He comes from a lush southern European kingdom that he's genuinely proud of: the warm climate, the constant sunshine, the fertile landscape. That happiness he carries around? He credits the sun for most of it.
His personality is basically bright and optimistic, the cheerful country type. He gets sidetracked and enthusiastic really easily, which can work for or against him. The flip side is that he's genuinely terrifying when he actually gets angry, and he can come across as pretty insensitive or just completely oblivious to what's going on around him.
Spain's best known for his relationship with Romano, who he raised as a kid. He originally wanted Italy instead—Austria grabbed him first—but Spain ended up caring deeply for Romano anyway, fighting off France and the Ottoman Empire just to keep him around. He taught Romano everything, which is why the two share so much culturally. Even though Romano doesn't live with him anymore and had some bitter feelings about the whole situation, Spain still dotes on him. He's got a huge soft spot there that hasn't faded. His dream is still to have both Italy and Romano living with him, and with Italy it's even closer—Italy still calls him "Spain-niichan." Spain was also the one who gave Italy his nickname, "Ita-chan."
Belgium and the Netherlands lived at his place at some point too. Their relationship now isn't totally clear, though the Netherlands showed up celebrating Christmas with him in 2010.
Spain used to be genuinely powerful, traveling the world and making real moves globally. Then he got beaten down by a young America, pirate England, and the Netherlands—got sent straight into poverty and wars, losing his superpower status entirely. But he's the type to bounce back. He's been recovering over the years, and that easy-going personality of his has definitely helped.
He's closely aligned with France and Prussia historically (they were allies during the War of Austrian Succession), which is why fans always lump them together. The fandom calls them the "Bad Touch Trio," the "Bad Friends Trio," or sometimes the "Useless Big Brother Trio." They're genuinely best friends according to creator Himaruya Hidekaz, and their loyalty runs deep.
As for food, his dishes lean heavily on tomatoes—like, really heavily. And sweets that somehow manage to not actually taste very sweet.
