Thomas Wagner grew up in Trost District and joined the 104th Trainees Squad, where he's probably best known for his role in Eren's early days at the academy—he was actually one of the first to interrogate Eren about the Colossal Titan sighting. Later, Thomas handled the training equipment for the Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear, including operating it during Eren's second go at the aptitude test. On Keith Shadis' orders, he swapped gear with Eren, which revealed that Eren's equipment had been faulty the whole time. After graduating from the squad, Thomas decided to join the Scouting Legion.
