Ushio to Tora follows a high school student named Ushio Aotsuki who becomes entangled with a massive, tiger-like monster that's been following him around—sometimes visible, sometimes not. It turns out Ushio's samurai ancestor sealed this beast, Tora, in a cave roughly 500 years ago using a legendary spear called the Beast Spear, which lets its wielder tap into the original wielder's combat skills. When Ushio accidentally breaks the seal, he finds himself forced to free Tora to stop an onslaught of other monsters drawn to the cave. Now the two are stuck with each other—Tora wants to eat Ushio, but won't risk it as long as Ushio has the spear. The series is basically about them learning to coexist while fighting off all manner of mythological creatures, with Tora struggling to adapt to the modern world thrown in for good measure.
