Under the Clouds During Japan's early Meiji period, crime has gotten so bad that the government built Gokumonjou—a massive prison sitting in the middle of a lake with supposedly no escape. The Kumou brothers run the ferry service that brings prisoners there: Tenka, the weird family patriarch; Soramaru, his impulsive but good-hearted middle brother; and Chuutarou, the innocent youngest. Their housekeeper Shirasu Kinjou rounds out their small household. Life in the perpetually cloudy town of Oumi is pretty quiet, all things considered. What Soramaru and Chuutarou don't know is that their real family duty has nothing to do with ferrying criminals. Oumi's history holds a dark secret: the Orochi, a massive serpentine creature that possesses a human body and awakens every three centuries. The Kumou family's actual job is to seal it away before it fully revives. If they fail, the world basically ends. As the Orochi's resurrection looms, the brothers have to figure out how to keep their spirits up and do what needs doing—even with the weight of the world on their shoulders.
