Sixteen-year-old Hayate Ayasaki's life is basically a disaster. He's been working part-time jobs nonstop just to keep up with his parents' ridiculous spending habits. Then one day they vanish completely, leaving him stuck with a 150 million yen debt and debt collectors on his tail. Desperate and running out of options, Hayate hides in a park and decides his only way out is to kidnap some rich kid for ransom. He spots a wealthy-looking blonde girl and makes his move—except she gets kidnapped before he can even grab her. But Hayate manages to save her anyway. Grateful for the rescue, the girl offers him a job as her butler. Turns out she's from an incredibly wealthy family. Problem is, Hayate's terrible luck follows him everywhere. Even with steady employment, he can't seem to catch a break—misfortune just keeps finding him, no matter what he does.
