Melmo's mother dies in a traffic accident, leaving Melmo and her younger brother Totoo to fend for themselves. From heaven, their mother asks God for help, and he gives her a set of magical candies to send down to Melmo. The blue candies age her up ten years, while the red ones reverse the process. Using these powers, Melmo transforms into various adults—a nurse, teacher, policewoman, and more—to solve problems and look after Totoo. Rubio, a grade school kid, finds a meteorite in his backyard containing two strange helmets. When he puts one on, a voice speaks to him: an alien who warns that a massive space monster called Zonda is heading for Earth. The alien offers Rubio the power to stop it. Rubio shares the other helmet with his classmate Kuriko, and the two set off to find and defeat Zonda. The magical hats let them fly and grant superhuman strength. After traveling the world and dealing with various threats, they eventually blast off into space, where they finally track down Zonda.
