Kazuki Mutou dies saving a girl from a monster attack—except the next morning, he wakes up wondering if it was just a dream. Spoiler: it wasn't. Turns out the girl, Tokiko Tsumura, was actually a skilled fighter trying to take down the homunculus (a shape-shifting creature that eats people), and Kazuki just got in the way. To bring him back to life, she replaces his heart with a kakugane, an alchemic device that lets him summon a lance to fight these monsters. Tokiko's part of the Renkin Kenshi, an organization of alchemist soldiers dedicated to protecting humanity from homunculi and their mysterious creator. Now Kazuki's dragged into this world and teams up with Tokiko to hunt down whoever's behind everything. The series also includes the one-shot "Embalming: Dead Body and Bride" in Volume 10.
