The story follows Chitose Fujinomiya, a wealthy girl whose world falls apart when her father dies, leaving behind massive debts. Stripped of her fortune and expelled from the prestigious City Academy, she's left with basically nothing except the clothes on her back and a pink goldfish named Gyopi-chan—the last thing she has from her father. Lost and desperate, she collapses on the grounds of Country Jr. High School, a run-down but genuinely happy place where students are rowdy though well-meaning, and farm animals casually hang around (and even sit in on classes). When Chitose recovers and actually enrolls, she's immediately horrified by the poverty surrounding her. Despite going from rich to broke, her snobbish attitude hasn't budged an inch.
