Ten years ago, a mysterious darkness engulfed Tokyo. What started as a small black spot in the sky expanded outward, consuming everything in its wake and creating what's now called the "Lightless Zone." Creatures called Imashime have since emerged from that darkness, hunting humans at night. The only defense humanity has are massive fighting machines called Vess, which are equipped with special piercing weapons designed to stop the Imashime from regenerating. Saginuma Akashi is one of the best Vess pilots around, and he's just been selected—along with a handful of others—to lead the first military expedition into the Lightless Zone itself.
