Synopsis

Willem Kmetsch is the last of the Emnetwiht, a human race that vanished five centuries ago when the Beasts wiped them out. He's spent his long life on one of the floating islands that now serve as humanity's refuge, surrounded by various other species—all of them marked with distinctive features like horns, wings, scales, or fangs. Willem, lacking any of these traits, is known as a "markless." When he crosses paths with another markless named Ctholly Nota Seniorious, it seems like nothing special. But after taking on a military job, Willem discovers he's been assigned to look after a group of young Leprechaun girls. These kids turn out to be crucial to the fight against the Beasts, and they're willing to throw their lives away for the cause—mostly because they've been trained as weapons and don't know any better. Wanting to give them something better than a soldier's life, Willem takes on a father-figure role, trying to provide the normalcy they've never had. But as they head off to battle, he's forced to confront something he never thought he'd have to face: watching children he cares about go to war.
