After humanity's apocalyptic Last War, the world is a mess. A massive forest filled with flameling creatures and other dangerous beasts now covers most of the planet, with small human settlements surviving in protected pockets. The problem is that humans have been fundamentally changed by a weapon used in the war—they spontaneously combust if they get anywhere near an open flame. The only safe energy source left is what's inside flamelings, so firecatchers armed with sickles venture into the forest to hunt them down. Among the firecatcher communities, there's a legend about someone who will become the "Firecatcher Lord." This person supposedly has the unique ability to harvest fire from the Wandering Spark, a thousand-year comet that was launched into space before the Last War but is now making its way back to Earth.
