Synopsis

Serge Battour is the mixed-race son of a French viscount and a Romani sex worker. Despite being genuinely kind and intelligent, he's rejected by both his family and peers because of his ethnicity. He enrolls at Lacombrade Academy—his father's old school—hoping to finally find somewhere he belongs. Gilbert Cocteau is also an orphan from a wealthy family, but he's made a name for himself at Lacombrade for the opposite reasons: he's strikingly beautiful, completely unmotivated academically, and openly sleeps with other students for money. He has zero interest in making friends, focusing instead on his relationship with his uncle Auguste. When the school faces a housing crunch, Serge and Gilbert get paired as roommates—a shock to everyone, since Gilbert's antisocial streak has made him impossible to live with before. Serge, being naturally outgoing and optimistic, decides he's going to befriend Gilbert no matter what. Gilbert, for his part, just wants to either control Serge or drive him away. Somehow, against all odds, the two actually connect. They develop a deep, dark bond that eventually becomes romantic—surprising both of them in the process.
