Nogami Hajime is a gamer who loves self-imposed challenges—the kind of guy who'll beat games at the lowest possible level or stick to using just one character. In a VRMMORPG, he plays as Ichino and exploits a game mechanic that lets him stay Level 1, earning him the nickname "Complete Novice." Three months before the story begins, a hacker breaks into the game and fragments his sister Nogami Ren's character data into eight items called Memory Fragments. When the game company tries to respond, the hacker warns them off: keep running the game as normal, or this happens to everyone else. So Hajime teams up with his father Nogami Jin—who happens to be one of the game's developers—and Jin's coworkers to search for the fragments while staying within the game's rules. Using clues from other players and data his father digs up from the system, Hajime sets out to track down all eight pieces of his sister's character.
