Yukari Marii looks innocent enough, but she's got a bizarre condition: she sees every living thing as a robot. Her friend Manabu "Gaku" Hatou initially writes it off as just Yukari being weird, but eventually realizes there's something real going on. Despite how strange she is, Yukari's cute appearance makes Hatou fiercely protective of her—though Yukari just thinks of Hatou as a "super-modifiable all-purpose robot." This warped worldview has isolated Yukari completely. It's even driven her old friend Nanami Tenjou to be downright cruel to her. After things come to a head, Hatou discovers Yukari isn't alone—other people have these strange perceptions too, called "Qualia." When Yukari gets recruited into a school for kids with Qualia, Hatou finds herself caught up in something way bigger and darker than she bargained for.
