In an industrializing world, a seemingly unstoppable monster has emerged—one that can only be killed by piercing its iron-protected heart. When it bites humans, it transforms them into Kabane, aggressive undead creatures that pose a constant threat. On the island of Hinomoto, people have built fortified stations for protection and rely on steam-powered locomotives called Hayajiro to transport goods and survivors between them. Ikoma, a young man working at Aragane station helping build these locomotives, has secretly crafted his own weapon—the Tsuranukizutsu—specifically designed to kill Kabane. He's been waiting for a chance to test it. Then he meets Mumei, a mysterious girl who somehow avoids the mandatory Kabane inspections. That same night, everything changes when a Hayajiro goes haywire, its crew having turned into Kabane. As the creatures attack Aragane station, Ikoma finally gets the opportunity he's been waiting for.
