Momonga is a regular salaryman who spends most of his downtime playing Yggdrasil, a dive-based MMORPG that's huge in Japan thanks to its massive world and crazy customization options. But like all things, it had to end—the servers shut down in 2138. On the game's final day, Momonga, leader of the guild Ainz Ooal Gown, logs in one last time to say goodbye at the guild headquarters. After spending time reflecting on his friends and the memories he made, he waits for the automatic logout as midnight approaches. Except it never comes. Instead of being kicked out, he suddenly finds himself actually inside the game world—stuck in his avatar's body, and surrounded by NPCs who somehow have feelings and consciousness. With nowhere else to go, Momonga decides to go by his guild's name, figuring that if any other players made it into this world, they'd recognize Ainz Ooal Gown. Determined to figure out what the hell is happening, he sets out to explore this strange new world and get to the bottom of the mystery.
