As a kid, Nao Okura's favorite thing was watching her mother make wagashi—traditional Japanese sweets. When her mom landed a live-in job at Kogetsuan, a shop with over four hundred years of history, Nao met Tsubaki Takatsuki, the heir to the business. He was a bright, warm presence in her childhood. But everything changed when tragedy struck: her mother was arrested for a crime she didn't commit, and Tsubaki's testimony put her away. Fifteen years later, Nao—now going by Nao Hanaoka—has become a skilled wagashi maker herself. Eventually her work brings her back to Kogetsuan and face-to-face with Tsubaki. The cheerful boy she knew is gone. In his place is a cold, cruel man who doesn't even seem to recognize her. Then he does something unexpected: he proposes. He thinks her talent could revitalize Kogetsuan's wagashi reputation and wants her to marry him. Nao sees an opportunity. She agrees to the marriage, figuring it'll give her the access she needs to uncover what really happened all those years ago. What started as a marriage of convenience, though, might become something neither of them expected.
