The Third
Centuries after a catastrophic war wiped out most of humanity, Earth is under the watchful eye of The Third—a civilization living in the sky city Hyperius. These beings have a distinctive red jewel-like eye in their forehead that lets them access data and communicate. Their main job is keeping humans safe, which they do partly by strictly controlling access to advanced technology. Break the "technos taboo" and The Third will send Bluebreaker, their deadliest AI enforcer, to eliminate you. The story centers on Honoka, a 17-year-old girl who's human except for one thing: she has a blue third eye. The Third deemed her a genetic anomaly since she couldn't interface with them, so they abandoned her with human parents. Her unusual eye lets her sense chi and emotional energy in living things, plus spot cloaked enemies. Honoka makes her way across the barren wastelands doing odd jobs—clearing out giant insects, escorting travelers, that sort of thing—all from inside a sand tank piloted by Bogie, an AI guardian her grandfather left her. One night, she encounters Iks, a mysterious man who recently arrived on the planet. The Third is immediately suspicious of him, worried he might threaten humanity. Iks's true purpose doesn't become clear until the series finale, but he convinces Honoka to let him travel with her so he can learn more about the world. Along the way, she's often found reciting poetry from a writer named Dona Myfree.
