Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Jirou Azuma has always been able to talk to animals, which he uses to protect them. He and his grandfather are descendants of a shinobi clan, so they train in combat to keep that legacy going. His normal life changes when he rescues what seems like an ordinary black cat named Ragou—except Ragou isn't a cat at all. He's a mononoke, a demonic spirit locked in an ancient war with humanity. Things get worse fast. When another hostile mononoke shows up hunting Ragou, Jirou jumps in to protect him using his ninja training. He gets badly hurt—like, fatally hurt. But instead of taking Jirou's life force to heal himself, Ragou does the opposite. He transfers his own power to save Jirou, and the exchange gives Jirou incredible supernatural abilities that blend perfectly with his existing shinobi skills. Ryousuke Shiba, an officer from the Bureau of Espionage, witnesses all this. His job is hunting down dangerous mononoke before they kill people. Impressed by what he sees, Shiba recruits both Jirou and his grandfather to join a new bureau unit called Black Torch. Their mission: take on powerful mononoke and stop them from preying on humans.
