Synopsis

Shouya Ishida is a troublemaker in elementary school who finds deaf transfer student Shouko Nishimiya annoying. Even though she's genuinely trying to make friends, Shouya and his classmates decide she's worth mocking. Their jokes quickly escalate into actual bullying, and the teachers don't do anything to stop it. Things only change when Shouko transfers away—but instead of taking responsibility, the entire class pins the blame solely on Shouya. He becomes the new target, spending years as a social outcast treated with contempt by everyone around him. Fast forward to high school: Shouya unexpectedly runs into Shouko again after five years apart. Weighed down by guilt over what he put her through, he's determined to apologize and make things right, no matter what it takes.
