The Katjvarna Empire is locked in war with the Kioka Republic, with Katjvarna currently holding the line against enemy attacks. Yatorishino comes from a prominent military family and is determined to ace the high-ranking officer exams. She recruits Ikuta—a lazy, pacifist womanizer—to take the exams with her and help secure her top ranking in exchange for a favor from her family's connections. Their written test goes smoothly, but things fall apart when their transport boat sinks on the way to the next exam. Yatorishino, Ikuta, several other test-takers, and a mysterious young girl find themselves stranded deep in enemy territory.
