Kimichika Haijima moves back to his hometown of Fukui after getting kicked out of a Tokyo junior high volleyball club for causing trouble. He reunites with his childhood friend Yunii Kuroba, a naturally gifted player who falls apart under pressure. Together, they're a powerhouse duo—Haijima's got the passion and skill, Kuroba's got the athleticism. When they get to Seiin High School and join the volleyball team, they find a squad that's actually got some solid pieces already in place. There's the fired-up captain Shinichirou Oda, who's only 163 cm but makes up for it in attitude. The vice-captain Misao Aoki is sharp and talented, and the rest of the roster includes guys like Akito Kanno, a second-year who always wears long sleeves because of a sun allergy. From there, the team sheds its reputation as total pushover and becomes Fukui's team to watch. What follows is their climb toward nationals, complete with a bunch of rival teams ready to test them along the way.
