Makoto Naegi wins a lottery spot at Hope's Peak Academy, an elite school famous for recruiting "ultimates"—the best of the best in their respective fields. As an average guy with no special talents, he's designated the "Ultimate Lucky Student" just for getting in. But his first day goes completely wrong. Makoto and his classmates black out and wake up trapped inside the school with no way out. To top it off, they're greeted by Monokuma, a twisted bear mascot and the school's principal, who lays down the rules: someone has to commit murder and successfully get away with it to escape. If they're caught, they get executed. The killing continues until only one person's left standing. Stuck in this nightmare game, Makoto and his classmates have to figure out what's really going on while trying to survive each other. It's going to take intelligence, a dose of luck, and above all—hope.
