Shin Megami Tensei IV: Demonic Gene
In 1492, the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado is built on a rigid class system dividing the wealthy Luxurors from the poor Casualries. Both groups produce samurai who defend the kingdom against demons—though it's an uneasy arrangement. Among the new recruits is Walter, a hothead from the lower class, alongside his childhood friend Gina, who's constantly rescuing him from his own recklessness. One night Gina tries to stop Walter from fighting a powerful demon, but they both get dragged into a demon domain instead. They escape relatively unharmed, but Walter starts feeling sick afterward. Things get worse when he's assigned to investigate mysterious "literature" that's been turning people into demons. The case makes Walter increasingly uncomfortable with his role as a samurai and what he's actually defending. Unable to resist, Walter breaks into the Monastery's vault and reads one of the forbidden books himself. Opening its pages shatters everything he thought he knew about his homeland.
