The Holy Grail War is a ritualistic battle where seven mages compete to claim an omnipotent wish-granting device. Each mage summons a Servant—an ancient heroic spirit pulled from legend—to fight on their behalf. The Einzberns, one of the war's major factions, have hired Kiritsugu Emiya, a notorious mage killer, as their representative in the Fourth Holy Grail War. He's up against six other competitors, each with their own motivations for wanting the Grail—whether that's improving humanity, gaining fame, or something else entirely. Fate/Zero takes place a decade before Fate/Stay Night and follows the events of this Fourth Holy Grail War.
