Sarai is set in a flooded world where Japan has been completely submerged. People here carry a weird genetic mutation that keeps most from living past 16—and those who do survive that long transform into grotesque monsters. Society's basically collapsed, leaving almost no law or order. One of the few institutions that still exists is the warrior maids: hired bodyguards willing to do absolutely anything for their clients, basically working as protective slaves. Sarai Kannagi and her partner Flicker are warrior maids themselves. Throughout the story, they take on jobs across this desolate, broken world, fighting all kinds of nightmarish threats—humans mutated into massive rock creatures, hostile arctic tribes, and plenty of other mutated abominations that come with the territory.
