The world's in the middle of an industrial revolution when a monster shows up that's basically unstoppable—unless you manage to pierce its iron-protected heart. The real problem is that it can bite humans and turn them into Kabane, aggressive undead creatures that spread like a plague. On the island of Hinomoto in the far east, people have built stations to survive against these things. They use steam-powered locomotives called Hayajiro to move between stations and transport goods. Ikoma is a local kid who works building Hayajiro in Aragane Station. He's been secretly developing his own weapon, the Tsuranukizutsu, hoping for a chance to actually use it against the Kabane. Then he meets Mumei, a girl who mysteriously gets exempted from the standard Kabane inspection everyone else has to go through. That same night, things go wrong fast—the Hayajiro goes haywire with its crew infected and turned, and suddenly the station is under attack. It's the moment Ikoma's been waiting for.
