The Sonozaki family has always kept twin sisters Mion and Shion separated—Mion stays in Hinamizawa to eventually inherit the family legacy, while Shion is sent away to St. Lucia Academy. But Shion breaks out and comes back home, only to walk straight into tragedy. After sneaking back, she poses as her sister to reunite with Mion and picks up a part-time job. That's when she meets Satoshi Houjou, a boy around her age, and falls hard for him. But when she finds out about the abuse he suffers at home, her feelings curdle into resentment—even toward his little sister Satoko. When things escalate and Satoshi suddenly vanishes, Shion starts to wonder if her own family had something to do with it. A year later, Keiichi Maebara shows up in town. Mion's interested in him, which somehow brings all of Shion's old feelings for Satoshi rushing back. Now she's desperate to finally figure out what actually happened to him. But the deeper she digs, the further she falls into obsession and madness.
