A year after Natsumi Kimiyoshi's family left the mountain town of Okinomiya, disaster strikes. The locals had always warned them about Oyashiro's curse—supposedly, anyone who abandons Okinomiya or the nearby village of Hinamizawa will face divine punishment. For a while, nothing happened. Then toxic gas suddenly erupts from a swamp near Hinamizawa, killing thousands in what becomes known as the Great Hinamizawa Disaster. Natsumi has no idea this catastrophe is about to trigger a chain of horrific events. Following the disaster, former Hinamizawa residents—including Natsumi's own grandmother—start acting increasingly unstable. Convinced that Oyashiro's curse is real, her grandmother covers their house in protective talismans and commits unspeakable acts, including drowning puppies, in an attempt to appease the god. The family becomes terrified for their safety as her grandmother's behavior spirals. Desperate to protect her children, Natsumi's mother eventually crosses a line she can't come back from.
