Over thirty years ago, a dimensional gate opened up above Antarctica, and alien invaders called JAM poured through. Humanity managed to push them back, but the fight wasn't over—the newly formed FAF was created to chase them through the gate to their homeworld, a planet nicknamed Fairy, and finish the job. That was decades ago. The war's still going on. Second Lieutenant Rei Fukai is a pilot in the FAF's Tactical Combat and Surveillance Unit 3, stationed over Fairy. His job is straightforward: fly reconnaissance missions, gather intel on JAM, and get back alive. The only problem is that "alive" isn't always part of the equation, and his only real companion out there is his fighter—an advanced, sentient AI-equipped plane called the FFR-31 Sylphid, call sign Yukikaze. Between the two of them, they've got to survive in a war that seems like it'll never end.
