Four legendary heroes once saved this world—one with a sword, one with a spear, one with a bow, and one with a shield. When calamity threatens the land again, the kingdom of Melromarc calls them back. In modern-day Japan, four ordinary people suddenly find themselves transported to a fantasy world, chosen to be these heroes. Naofumi Iwatani, an otaku gamer, becomes the Shield Hero—and immediately gets the short end of the stick. A shield doesn't do damage, he has no experience, and everyone assumes he's basically useless. When the four heroes split up to begin their adventures, Naofumi's only companion is Malty, the kingdom's beautiful princess. At least, that's what he thinks. Malty robs him blind, then accuses him of sexual assault. Just like that, Naofumi's branded a criminal and kicked out of society. Bitter and alone, he decides there's only one thing left to do: get stronger and make everyone pay for what they did to him.
